During Pregnancy Alcohol Is A Strict No-No!

There is no doubt about the fact that drinking liquor can cause irreparable damage to the child in the womb of a pregnant mother. During pregnancy alcohol is a must avoid. Intake during the nine months of conception almost amounts to sharing the cocktail with the fetus. The amount of alcohol ingested by the would-be-mother is also ingested by the unborn baby. Below are some of the after-effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

The first consequence of drinking alcohol during impregnation is that the physical and cognitive development of the child would be affected. The risk from liquor is highest during the earliest trimesters of pregnancy. This is the time when the critical organs of the fetus are being formed and the cells are going through rapid division. The more the expecting mother drinks during her pregnancy, the greater would be the health risk faced by the unborn baby.

Alcohol can harm the fetus in many ways. The effects of alcohol abuse for the baby include miscarriage, physical defects, and low weight at the time of birth, hyperactivity and decreased span of attention. The overall development of the baby can undoubtedly be damaged by high consumption of alcohol by the expecting mothers.

One of the most common causes of mental retardation in children is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This condition however is rare as it can affect only one out of three hundred pregnancies. The full syndrome affects only about a third of infants whose moms drink over three bottles of wine each day during the nine months of pregnancy.

The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome has various features and can affect the unborn baby in different ways. One of the common symptoms that babies suffering from the syndrome exhibit is that they are born small, showing abnormalities in the nervous system and the brain. They may also suffer from physical abnormalities like a receding chin or forehead and a short nose.

Not only is the alcohol injurious for the fetus but is also extremely harmful for the impregnated woman. A woman who drinks heavily before, during and after pregnancy would face a slew of serious health problems. She might suffer from mineral and vitamin deficiencies and damage to the internal organs like the liver, digestive system and the brain. She could also face an increased risk of cancer or undergo depression.

The evidences against drinking are mounting by the day. In fact, it has recently been discovered that children of mothers who drank during their pregnancy experience developmental problems throughout their childhood and even during their adolescence. Most researches show that during pregnancy alcohol consumption at any level is harmful for the baby as well as the mother.
